On Friday, March 7th, we were joined by Kate and Zoe, two student activists working on the Kleercut campaign, which is pressuring Kleenex to stop cutting down old-growth forests for the tissue. Kleenex is the only tissue brand that doesn’t use recycled paper. (The industry average is 60% recycled.) The Kleercut campaign is organizing on college campuses to get colleges to cancel their contracts with Kleenex. What a great way for a forgotten actress to bounce back into the collective consciousness.

Poor Dawn Wells, the actress who played “Mary Ann” on Gilligan’s Island, was busted in Teton County, Idaho for basically a couple of roaches and empty marijuana containers.

She was sentenced Feb. 29, 2008 to five days in jail and fined $410.50. Her bemused expression speaks volumes about the absurdity of marijuana criminalization and our countries failed “war on drugs.” Kudos to you, Dawn Wells. You’ll always be a king in our books. Now somebody in Hollywood get that woman a job. She’s looking great for 69, and anyone who can strike a pose like that still has some acting left in her. And if anyone makes stickers of our image, you totally have to give us some.

As promised, the United Elves Guild took their strike to the streets of San Francisco’s shopping district on Black Friday. They marched onto Powell and Market to find a veritable throng of television, print, and radio journalists waiting from them. It seemed like the media was happy to have a new twist to tack on at the end of the same, tired “look at people shopping” stories they’ve been recycling for years. For pictures of the the elves in action, see Steve Rhodes and Shellac Fanatic. Here’s a video montage of the elves doing their thing.

It was fun watching people react to the elves’ carols and chants. The typical reaction when you see a bunch of adults in elves costumes is to smile. But when those full-sized elves are chanting things like “On strike, shut it down, the North Pole is a union town,” it creates some cognitive dissonance. People would walk by with confused looks that seemed to say “why are the elves angry”? That is, the people who were paying attention. A disturbing number of people on the streets had those depressing blank expressions you see on people at the mall or the DMV or playing slot machines. And lord, were there a lot of people out there. Throngs of people grimly walking from store to store.Props to the elves for wading into that mass of consumerist humanity and opening a few eyes to the possibilities of Buy Nothing Day. And big props to Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping for inspiring the Elf Strike. If you buy only one shopping-reduction movie ticket this holiday season, make sure it’s for What Would Jesus Buy, now playing at the Lumiere. And check out the cerebral, poetic side of Reverend Billy in this SFist interview and in the videos in our previous post.

Happy Buy Nothing Day, San Francisco! If you’re already sick of Christmas commercialization this year, if you’re bewildered by the fact that Walmart, Toys R Us, and other megastores are opening at 5AM today, if you’re mad as hell and can’t take it anymore, here are three things you can do about it this year:

Watch these four videos of a contemplative Reverend Billy in conversation with Chicken John and Savitri D (his wife and theatrical director), discussing San Francisco, affordable housing, the first amendment, and the dangers of consumerism and capitalism.

See the other three videos of Billy and Savitri below the jump.

Join the United Elves Guild’s strike in support of Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping:

In an unprecedented show of solidarity, the San Francisco chapter of the United Elves Guild (UEG) will pack up their tools and stage a work stoppage strike at the corner of Powell and Market Streets across from the San Francisco Centre on Friday, November 23 from noon to 1pm as part of the national annual Buy Nothing Day demonstration, a 24-hour shopping abstinence action.

Go buy a movie ticket. Kind of ironic, eh? Well, Reverend Billy’s documentary, What Would Jesus Buy, is opening in San Francisco this weekend at the Lumiere. If you don’t know the good Reverend’s work, it’s a great introduction to his hilarious and biting effort to confront America’s out-of-control consumerism. Even if you’ve already seen the film, go see it again. The higher the movie is rated this opening weekend, the more theaters across the country will pick it up. Middle America needs to see Reverend Billy. The Reverend will be attending the Saturday night performances!

Perhaps a cartoon narrative is a simplistic way to map out the Illuminati/Roman Empire/CIA global conspiracy- but it sure makes it easier to tell who’s in the Skull-N-Bones when they have see-through skulls like the Republican Zombies in They Live.

Highlights include coverage of early banking history and the legal personhood of corporations, CIA assassinations, WTO resistance- all while not treating the flyover states like retarded cattle. Good job, Jeremy and Lauren!
